Southern Museum

South Mexico

FR-EE’s design for a new art museum in the South region of Mexico is derived from a study of the surrounding Mayan culture, which is characterized by ruins that have a strong physical presence and historical meaning for the distinct population and culture. Originating from a standard pyramid shape, necessary for structural resistance, FR-EE inserted interior perforations to enable users to simultaneously pass through open light-filled voids for contemplation and the programmed exhibition and service areas. The building provides an ideal environment for accommodating art and ample views to the surrounding nature. The use of local limestone celebrates the regional cultural identity and prioritizes the environmental and economic sustainability of the design.
