Lisbon Cruise Terminal

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s municipal government initiated a design competition for a new Cruise Terminal. The purpose of the terminal is to serve the millions of tourists who visit the city each year and to create economic gains for the city and country. The Cruise Terminal sits on a privileged site amongst many important historical attractions. It is directly in front of Lisbon’s oldest district, Alfama, and on the Tejo River, which opens to the Atlantic Ocean. FR-EE proposed a simple gesture to create a sensual, attractive and organic structure that redefines the city’s historic skyline and makes a soft transition between the city and the ocean. The public space and roof of the building encourages movement around the site and connection to natural elements.
