Abastos Chapel

Mexico City

The Central de Abastos, one of the largest markets in the world, is the main platform for supplying fresh products and plants to Mexico City. Covering an area of 304 hectares/750 acres, it serves more than 25 million people and handles nearly 30% of the country’s fruit and vegetable production. fr·ee was approached to design a chapel for weekly religious services. Our proposal suggests an organic vertical form, linked to the topography of the mountains that surround the valley but distinct enough to stand out from its context. A single structural deformation defines the space and a perforation allows natural light to filter into the central nave.
